Lillie's Gullah Baskets
wife and I were driving along the South Carolina
coast, near Edisto, when we
saw a roadside stand selling
grass and reed baskets. A gentleman named Howard
was manning the
stand. He told us that his wife, Lillie,
made most of the baskets, although a few were made by
himself or one of
their children. The baskets were
and the love and skill required to make them was evident.
While my wife selected a basket to purchase,
I asked Howard’s
permission to photograph the stand because I could already
visualize the drawing I wanted to make. Recently we
discovered that Lillie has a website where you can read
more about these sweetgrass baskets.
Lillie's Gullah Baskets is a graphite drawing on 24" x 18" paper,
